Drawing costs artist € 100,000.00
In 2022, Engelen started YouTube livestreams in which she created Confession Drawings. The artist starts the livestream with a personal and authentic confession, which can be deep and existential but can also be about topics such as stress, rejection, and being stuck. Based on this confession, the artist then makes a drawing. Through the videos, she shows the viewers the process. And in the drawings, Engelen does not show the mental suffering, but rather something helpful, healing or empowering.
In the introduction (the confession) of drawing number 14, titled Brother, the artist recalls a painful event in which her father hit and kicked her. And she says that the cause of this is her brother. “My brother’s jealousy is extremely destructive to our family.”

The artist, who graduated from the art academy in the Netherlands in 1999 and in Sweden in 2013, always looks for the personal, the real, and the one-on-one experience in her work. Her cathartic drawings are part of her art practice. In her Confession Drawings, she opens up about her private life and uses it as inspiration for her drawings, which she then shows to the public.
On 4 February 2025, the artist received an email from her mother in which the mother wrote that she had gone to the notary and changed her will so that her daughter Kim Engelen would receive € 100,000.00 less of her inheritance. She showed the notary’s documents and his invoice. She added: “I insist that you take all of that off the internet. That is my STATEMENT.”
