Until 1999, I painted intensively on self-prepared and stretched canvas. Aka Regular Stretched Canvas (Museum Wrap). That means that all the paintings in this series are 100% handmade. From the production of the canvases to the actual paintings.
This also means that the works are not even in size. Partly intentionally. Partly because I painted on the canvases that I had ready. This also means that the canvases are not 100% even.
Marriage Road No. 5. is the last and smallest painting in the series Marriage. Corry is still standing behind Herman. Her eyes are closed. Herman looking back over his shoulder to Corry. They are painted in a mix of blue and green colors (teal, aquamarine, celeste, turquoise). The lands are yellow and the red curvy road is bright red.
Some paintings have damages. Such as this one. The smallest painting of the series has the biggest damage. A horizontal cut is on the left part of the pane (almost like cutting off a part of Hermans’s brain). These cuts have been added over time. Possibly by the moving and transporting of the paintings. Or by being handled by people who didn’t care about these paintings. I think these scars should remain visible. They have become part of these paintings.
But we can also decide to heal them. It is up to you—the new owner of these paintings.
